In recent years Spain has become one of the most festival-filled countries in Europe, thanks to some pretty savvy booking by festival organisers in the country and the beautiful (and very reliable) Spanish summers. Whereas there was a time where only those with a trust fund could afford to take trips abroad to festivals, now the tickets, flights and accommodation are all bundled up into budget friendly packages that make everything much more affordable. There are so many festivals in Spain right now that it can be difficult to know which ones to choose; if you really want to have a summer to remember next year then why not hire a car in Spain and plan a road trip around all of them, taking in some of the rest of Spain in between events. The Miami Winter Music Conference (or ‘WMC’) is an annual festival of dance music that takes place each year under the warm Miami sun. The conference first began in 1985 but since then has grown to become one of the most respected events on the dance music scene. The WMC provides an opportunity for some serious networking for dance music insiders, as well as the chance to gain valuable exposure for those who are looking to make their mark on the scene. While the event has become incredibly popular with producers, DJs, promoters and record label insiders from the US, a good proportion of the 300,000 attendees are made up of visitors from overseas, particularly countries like the UK, France and Spain. Concerts can be magical occasions, where thousands of people join together to have a good time to their favourite type of music. However, a handful of people seem hell-bent on ruining our concert experience by engaging in inappropriate or downright hateful behaviour. While you or I go to a concert to have a good time, they go to ruin everybody else’s experience, and are not happy unless everybody else is as miserable as them. With Edinburgh Festival 2011 only a matter of weeks away, the city is sensing that familiar buzz. It’s not that Edinburgh doesn’t have a certain tingling sensation all year round but with dozens of individual festivals, thousands of artists and celebrities and hundreds of thousands of tourists ready to descend all at once, this time of year is always a little bit special.
If you are planning a trip up to Edinburgh in August you may have booked your Edinburgh apartment and picked up the many programs for the many different festivals. The problem is though that there is just so much information that it can be nearly impossible to decide what you should go and see. Once you arrive you will almost immediately have a fist full of flyers for shows thrust into your palm, which are meant to help you make decisions but as there is such a high volume that it is like having a whole program again but in flyer sized chunks. Coldplay were amazing at Glastonbury festival last weekend. Love these guys or hate them (and I know a lot of people claim to hate them!) they are the perfect band to headline a festival like Glasto.
The highlight of a great set for me was this performance of their new single every teardrop is a waterfall which I think has the makings of a new coldplay classic. And if you look closely at the video you might see me, somewhere amoung the 80,000 people in the crowd:-)
The 2011 V festival will be held on 20-21st August. The lineup features the usual mix of pop through to indie through to just plain random acts. See the full lineup here.
