You are standing on the edge and waiting for the perfect moment to start your downhill. You look down at your MP3 player of choice and slide through your playlists, looking for the set that is going to bring you from the top of the mountain or edge of the pipe, and make you forget where you are for just a few minutes. The right set-list blasting in your ears is going to make you live your own music video, where choosing the wrong songs is going to be distracting.
When I was five I wanted to be a magical faerie creature. When I was ten I wanted to be an astronaut (or a crew member of the Enterprise). When I was twelve I wanted to be Winona Ryder in Beetlejuice. When I was sixteen I wanted to be Mary Shelley. It wasn’t until I was in my twenties that I wanted to be myself. It was around that time that I began to discover just what I wanted to do with my life. It was also around this time that I chose to stop buying celebrity magazines. Unfortunately the culture of celebrity has grown even more influential than it was when I was growing up. These days, when children and teenagers are asked that age old question “what do you want to be when you grow up” many will simply answer “famous” or “rich”. Many don’t even care how or why.
